Sunsets, the best time of the day, are proof that endings can be beautiful too. Watching the sun go below the horizon is one of the exciting things to do in any city and Athens was no exception.
The heart of civilization and the capital of Greece, Athens has many sunset points. Try including as many as you can in your travel itinerary.

Athens sunset points
1. Flisvos Marina area
Who hates beaches? Is there anything spectacular to watch than a beachside sunset?
Athens being a coastal city offers you a perfect beach to enjoy your vacation. Just go, grab a drink, and enjoy the sunset.
Where is the beach sunset point in Athens?
From the stop, Sýntagma (city center), board the metro #M2 in direction Elliniko. Get down in stop St. Syggrou and make a transfer with Bus #B2 (direction Agios Kosmas) and get down in stop ‘OULEN’. The entrance to the Marina is just a stone’s throw away. Coastal guards will greet you at the entrance.
Visit the official website flisvos for more info.
2. Lycabettus hill
At an altitude of 300 m above sea level, the Lycabettus hill is Athens’s highest point. This limestone hill is only 2 km away from the city center. The hilltop sunset point offers a gorgeous view overlooking the whole city of Athens. Restaurants, cafes make your stay at the top pleasant. The views are surreal and even the Acropolis is visible. Stay a bit longer and enjoy the night view as well.
Pro-tip: Reach the Lycabettus hilltop at least an hour before the sunset. It’s hard to find a place to enjoy the view. No one wants to descend the hill. Once you grab a nice spot, don’t let away.
Lycabettus Funicular
You need to take the funicular to reach the top. The altitude is 210 meters and the journey is ~ 3 minutes It runs every 20 minutes and the queue is unbelievably long. We had to wait about 30 minutes and almost missed the sunset.
The price is 5 € one way and 7.5 € if you opt both ways. Try descending the hill by walk if you have more time left.
How to reach Lycabettus hill
From the city center, take the metro #M3 towards the airport and get down in stop ‘Evangelism’. From there, you need to walk a few hundred meters to reach the funicular base.
Note: The walk to very steep with multiple steps. It easily takes 20 – 30 minutes on average, so carry enough water.
3. The Acropolis
Another popular sunset point in Athens is the Acropolis itself. Just 1.5 km away from the center, you can stroll to the Acropolis entrance. Located on a hilltop at a height of 156m, the Acropolis consists of many ancient structures that hold architectural importance in history.
Tip: Did you know that the Acropolis entrance is free to any student in the world? Just carry your valid student card.
4. Board a sunset cruise
Want to enjoy a sunset on the sea? Then board a sunset cruise in Athens.
There are numerous sunset cruise providers and the template is common, a van picks you up from the hotel, enjoy the sunset in the cruise, followed by a dinner buffet. Compare prices in Viator and book directly with the cruise to save some money.
Note: The prices may go as high as 500 €. I wouldn’t recommend this option unless you prefer luxury.
My experience
Athens as a whole offers many varieties for viewing the sunset. Be it a beach or a hilltop or in a cruise, sunsets are always amazing; an opportunity to reset your day.
The beachside sunset, Flisvos Marina was my favorite sunset point in Athens. Reaching the beach was simple and it was less crowded. Include sunset views in all your travel itineraries and see your mood change.
