Renting A Car In Bali
As there isn’t any public transport in Bali, the only way to go around the complete island is by either
- Renting a self-drive car or
- Renting a car with a driver
Choosing a car rental
There are many car rental operators in Bali. After extensive research, I chose the company Bali hire driver.
Their Tripadvisor reviews were good and also offer discounts if you rent for more than 3 days.
The car rental price is 540,000 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) ~36 $ per day (10 hours). This includes
- Â a well-maintained Air-conditioned (AC) car
- English speaking driver
- driver fee
- parking fee
- unlimited fuel
- water bottles as a welcome drink
1. Extra hours
For every extra hour, the rental price is 50,000 IDRÂ ~ 3.5 $
2. Is there any additional discount?
If rent the vehicle for more than 3 days, then you get a discount of 40,000 IDR ~3$ each day. So the rent comes to ~ 33 $ per day.
Post Covid, petrol prices have gone up by 30%. So this was the maximum discount they could offer us.
3. Car type
The rental vehicles are mostly SUV type. Our rental was a 5-seater Innova with lots of boot space.

Are there any other options apart from car rental?
While cities like Ubud, and Kuta offer motorbike rentals on per day basis, this option isn’t sustainable for long distances like North, East, or West Bali.
Taxi apps such as Grab or Gojek are good for one-way travel. They can’t be trusted for a return trip.
Therefore, hiring a rental car in Bali is the best way to enjoy quality time on the beautiful island.
Self-drive rental vs hiring a driver
The traffic situation in Bali is crazy. With loads of tourists visiting the Island, covering 20-30 km takes an hour. If you start your trip after 8 am, your journey becomes worse. Self-drive rental may be enjoyable in European or Western countries, but in Asian countries like Thailand, India, Malaysia, or Bali, I highly recommend renting a car with a driver.
Is renting a car worth it in Bali?
Renting a car is definitely worth it if you are a group or want to enjoy the Island in a hassle-free manner.

No, the toll price isn’t included. There is only one toll and drivers don’t use it. They bypass through a local route. - Can I pay in another currency?
No, only IDR is accepted. The driver will anyway take to a nearby exchange center - Do I have to pay the car rental in advance?
No, you pay per day basis. Also, you pay only after your trip. That is one of the highlights of this tour operator. - Is there any cancellation cost?
No, there is no cancellation cost. Just inform them a day before. - Is there any hidden fee?
